Chapter 7
Wednesday was my usual day off through the week but Dawn had called in sick and Tim had asked me to cover the kitchen so he could work out front. It wasnât until the Friday following my birthday that I managed to get out to Bowland forest to see Gran. Although she assured me when I texted that she was feeling greatâbetter than she had done in years.
As I wandered slowly down the path towards the twisted oak tree, I told myself I was just being extra careful. That I didnât want to get lost again even though most of the snow had melted and the path was clearly visible, stretching ahead of me.
Totally not loitering in the hopes of seeing Aldrich.
Sometimes I really hated that little voice in the back of my head.
Yeah, when Iâm right.
I huffed and my breath fogged in front of me.
When I finally got to Granâs, I found her cooking up a storm in the kitchen. She had music playing and was dancing around as she stirred something on the stove. I couldnât help my smile. She did look better, remarkably so.
âRed! Iâm making your favourite, seeing as I couldnât for your birthday.â She opened the oven door and the kitchen was filled with the aroma of roasting chicken, and my mouth watered.
âYou didnât have to,â I said as I leaned in to kiss her cheek. She didnât deem that worthy of a response.
An hour later, as I placed my cutlery on my empty plate, I declared it was the best roast sheâd ever made, which made Gran smile. And after doing the dishes, when I finally left, I felt as if I would have to roll myself back to town I was so full. That ever-present worry after sheâd called me had eased with seeing how much better she was since the last time Iâd seen her.
As I stepped off the lane and away from Granâs, Aldrich appeared out of nowhere. He took my breath away. His silver locks were covered in a black fur hat that matched his fur coat, and he looked as if he was part of the woods. So different to the last time Iâd seen him. When all that skin had been on display for me to touch, to taste. I swallowed as my dick twitched at the memories, and Aldrich smiled at me.
âRed. I was hoping Iâd run into you.â
He was? I lifted my hand, fingers seeking out the chain beneath my coat. Aldrichâs gaze dropped to my neck. Could he tell I was wearing his present?
He stepped closer to me, so I had to peer up at him. âHowâs your gran?â
The fact he remembered, that he asked after her meant more than it probably should. âSheâs uh good. Like really good. Youâre going to have to give me the recipe for that chicken broth.â
He laughed. âIf you come back to my cabin, Iâll happily give it to you.â
My cheeks burned at where my mind went to. Was he still talking about the recipe? I kind of hoped not.
